10 great body positive accounts to follow on Instagram

These people are keeping it real. Really real.

WHILE IT’S FUN to look at glossy photos of celebrities and influencers on Instagram, scrolling through endless posing and perfect images can get you down.

These accounts are doing their best to spread messages of body positivity and self-love – a breath of fresh air for your feed.

1. Rebecca Flynn (@bopoireland)

Dublin woman Rebecca is trying to get Irish people involved in the body positive movement, instructing us to “be kinder to our bodies”. Read our interview with her here.

2. Megan Jayne Crabbe (@bodyposipanda)

After recovering from anorexia, Megan made it her mission to break down body myths and normalise scars, stretch marks, and rolls. Her rainbow hair is also #goals.

3. Harnaam Kaur (@harnaamkaur)

Sunday early morning when I left my friend's house in south London and got home at 6am, I was undressing in the bathroom and getting ready for bed. I still had my turban and make up on, but I was totally topless. Of corse I looked in the mirror and thought 'DAYAAMM B you look good! Your boobs look fab, I see you podgy part, you look squidgy and cute too!' I then stared deep into my own eyes and saw a powerful image. I saw my body in a way that I have never seen her before. What a special temple! I couldn't stop looking at her, I couldn't stop looking deep into my own eyes; I saw a powerful being, I felt an empowering energy with in my self! Harnaam was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome at the age of 12 and after years of fighting her facial hair, decided to just roll with it. She’s now a model, a body confidence activist, and the owner of a lush beard.

4. Louise O’Reilly (@stylemecurvy)

Irish fashion blogger Louise is of the opinion that you can be stylish at any size, and she always looks incredible. Follow for fashion tips and trendy plus size gear.

5. Jessamyn Stanley (@mynameisjessamyn)

I'm teaching the noon flow at @durhamyoga today & it's my next to last @durhamyoga class for the summer- see y'all at noon! While walking along the Thames outside the #tatemodernmuseum, @photoyography & I came across this giant bubble blowing display. Rosa asked the artist if we could shoot right in the midst of his beautiful scene. You know me- I was mad shy and embarrassed to break up his display. Not to mention that everyone and their mum was milling around and many of those people stopped to stare at and photograph the chubby black American in flower pants. But there was a lot of smiling and laughing. And Rosa totally distracted from my stage fright, enough for me to eventually pose on the Millennium Bridge. But this was one of the first shots from that day and it's reminding me to feel really grateful for all the photographers who have pushed me out of my comfort zone this year. I am very shy when it comes to this kind of photography because my attitude towards yoga asana photographs has changed so dramatically since the beginning of my yoga practice. But the best photographers have been sympathetic to my concerns while also getting my ass out into the middle of dense urban traffic if necessary. And it's because they've all been chill enough to just let me do my thing. Anyway, you know who you are, and both me and my practice are really fucking grateful for you. Argh I'm so behind on my #selflovebootcamp posts so today im doing yesterdays #embracethesquish post. It's taken me such a long time to come to terms with my squish. Which hasn't been great considering that every part of my body is squishy. The idea that our bodies have to be firm and toned is just taken for granted, leaving so many of us feeling completely undesirable and inadequate. After 26 years though, I can finally say that I love my squish. I love the curves and contours of my body. I love the way my tummy folds when I sit, the soft suppleness of my arms, the rolls that hug my waist, and the thick meatiness of my thighs. And don't even get me started on my new love affair with my ass! I never thought I could love those parts of me. I saw them as the obstacles to my happiness and success, the reason why I never felt accepted or appreciated, the thing that made me different and unworthy. Now I know different. Now I know that softness and squishiness are beautiful too. It's not about thin bodies vs fat bodies. It's not about standard sizes vs plus sizes. 8. Jillian Mercado (@jilly_peppa)

Jillian is a model living with muscular dystrophy, and is intent on challenging the fashion world’s narrow representation of beauty – last year, she was cast in a campaign for Beyoncé’s line of merchandise. A very big deal, you might agree.

You might recognise Gabby from her roles in Precious, Empire and American Horror Story, but she is also a complete delight on Instagram. Her confidence is infectious.
